If you want to get to know a new group of people, the fastest way to instant kinship (or enmity) is to play board games.
My UNC group played Taboo last night. If you've played, you know that Taboo, like most brain games, brings out everyone's true colors. After a few hours, I knew who is calm under pressure, who yells when they're nervous, who is uber competitive and who talks with their hands. Nothing like screaming about Arnold Schwarzenegger and rubbernecking to bond as a group.
Highlight - We're joined late in the game by some neighbors from rando places like Minnesota and New York. The girl beside me is from UNC, and she gets her word and says, "It's a type of dance we do in the South." Everyone from UNC shouts, “Shag.” As Carolinians, we all know about shagging on the boulevard. The non-UNC crew, not so much.
Naturally, we had to pause the game to demonstrate the dance and explain away the Austin Powers references. It reminded me of freshman year when Anna Brooks and I took our Floridian friend Lindsey shag dancing. The look on her face when we asked her if she wanted to go shagging … just like those poor kids during Taboo!
